Legacy - Backup

Every time you work on your Legacy family tree the Legacy programme automatically updates the data file. The data file is stored in the C:\Legacy\Data folder. The file ends with a fdb extension (Mine looks like this:
c:\Legacy\Data\watkins.fdb

THIS FILE IS THE UP-TO-DATE WORKING FILE OF YOUR FAMILY TREE. IT IS THE ONLY UP-TO-DATE FILE OF YOUR FAMILY TREE ON YOUR COMPUTER

IF THIS FILE BECOMES CORRUPTED OR IS INACCESSIBLE ON YOUR HARD DRIVE (FOR WHATEVER REASON) YOUR TREE MAY NOT BE RECOVERABLE. YOU WILL HAVE LOST ALL THAT WORK.

A backup is a copy of your working file (up to the time of the backup). Legacy creates a backup in a compressed (zip) file to save space.

Creating a backup of your working Legacy file is very simple. Backups can be created by:

  • Selecting  'Backup' from the File menu, or
  • Selecting 'Backup' when you close Legacy. Legacy automatically prompts you to backup every time you close the programme.

Selecting Backup from File Menu

Step 1. You can create a backup at any time by choosing "Backup Family File' from the File menu:

Step 2. The next screen allows you to customise your backups to your preferences.

(Hint: Unless you have a specific reason for changing what data files to back leave them on the default settings (Backup all).

Step 3. Click on the box 'Select Name and Location for Data Backup'

Step 4. The next screen is where you nominate the name of your backup file and where you want to store the file. Legacy defaults to storing the file in the Legacy Data folder.

You can change both the name of the backup file and where to store the file.

(Hint: Legacy automatically adds both time and date the file was created to the name you nominated so a file named 'watkins' would end up like this:
'watkins 2011-05-03 9.27.34.10AM'.
The consequence of this is that an entirely new file is created every time you backup. ie If you backed up your working file 3 times during the day you will end up with 3 (differently named) backup files in the Legacy Data folder. Over time you will end up with hundreds of backup files.

Step 5. You can prevent this from happening by clicking the 'Options' box and unchecking both options listed on the next screen.

If you choose this option your backup file name will remain as originally created. When a new backup is created you will be prompted to overwrite the old backup file. Choosing this option means that you will only have one up-to-date backup file in the Legacy Data folder.

Legacy also gives you the option of backup up your multimedia files (all the file held in Picture Gallery).

Step 6. Tick the box alongside the box marked 'Select Name and Location for Multimedia Backup'

Step 7. Click the 'Select Name and Location for Multimedia Backup' box and repeat Steps 4 & 5 shown above.

Backup When you Exit Legacy

Every time you exit Legacy you will be prompted to perform a backup. You can choose to ignore this prompt at you own peril.

The backup procedures are the same as those listed above.

IF YOU CHOOSE NOT TO BACKUP REGULARLY THEN BE PREPARED TO LOOSE YOUR HARD WORK AT SOME STAGE.
